2.08 - Trident: Wild Blueberry Twist

Well, I don't know how many times gum can really disappoint people, but we are finding a lot more we don't like, than we do like. Here is this pathetic attempt from Trident.

"Flavor from the gum goes really fast. The flavor hangs out as it coats your mouth."
"Unfortunately, it lasts a while. Not sure if it merely imprinted its vile taste onto my taste buds, or that my brain can’t forget evil."
"Which is not a good thing here, like others, I wish the taste would disappear sooner."
"It did not last very long (Thanks be to above)."

Layers...those commercials where everyone is talking about how they never get Layers. It is like the Trix Rabbit. Instead of all that crap, why not just go to the store and buy some. Or the Coyote...if he can mail order all that crap to try to catch the Roadrunner, why not just order a pizza? Anyway, back to my point: Layers doesn't live up to the hype.

1.88 - Wrigley's Hubba Bubba Glop: Strawberry Gush

Wrigley's Hubba Bubba Glop: Strawberry Gush is one of those gums, you remember them...they had the gooey center. Gel or Jelly or Liquid or some other unnameable goo that was supposed to make the gum more refreshing and more flavorful. Sometimes it worked out great, sometimes it didn't. I remember as a kid, these kinds of gums were cool. As an adult, things change. Either my perception or the quality of the gum/goo combo.

This gum comes in a hard case, which holds 5 pieces, which are large, pellet shaped, and coated with a harder shell (I guess all to protect the goo). A neat idea, but I wonder if they could just save money on the hard case and invest more into a better gum.

3.24 - Wrigley's Juicy Fruit

Wrigley's Juicy Fruit was one of the gum world's everlasting entries by Wrigley's, along with "Double Mint" and "Big Red" (which we will get to later on!).

We aren't really sure what fruit or fruits make up the "Fruit" in "Juicy Fruit". Wikipedia says that it is a combination of possibly peach, pineapple, and banana. And did you know that this gum was introduced over 115 years ago!

4.00 - Wrigley's Orbit: Spearmint

Orbit is a company whose TV ads advertise a clean mouth, "no matter what". Only imagine it with an exaggerated and annoying British accent, (so it is almost like "no matter wot"). Sometimes it doesn't quite work out. Sometimes it does. This is one of those sometimes it works out gums.

3.83 - Wrigley’s Extra Fruit Sensations: Sweet Watermelon

Wrigley’s Extra Fruit Sensations: Sweet Watermelon is, yet another, part of Wrigley's gum line. This one is not only part of the "Extra" line, but also part of a sub-set line called "Fruit Sensations". We will start visiting the Orbit line of gums and take a break from Wrigley's after this one.

This gum claims “Long Lasting Fruit Flavor” & “Yesterday, impossible to fit entire watermelon into mouth. Today, not so much," which is pretty funny to have as a slogan.

However, when I started chewing I did not care for the minty melon. I have never taken a bite of watermelon then nibbled on some mint leaves, so I am not sure why I would want gum that tastes that way."
"I like Watermelon and most artificial watermelon flavors, but I did not care for the taste of this gum."

1.70 - Fruit Stripe

Fruit Stripe gum. I remember being a kid and eagerly anticipating getting some more Fruit Stripe. It was fruity, the gum actually had different flavors in a single pack. I remember trading my lime for orange and thinking it can't get any better than this. Then I grow up, and realize, I haven't had any Fruit Stripe in over 20 years, maybe even 25! So I bought some for Now, Chew On This...

Fruit Stripe proclaims boldly on the package: "Now Longer Lasting Flavor". It also comes with some "tattoos" of the zebra in various colors, I suppose to further appeal to kids.

Wrigley’s Hubba Bubba “Ouch” Bubble Gum is, I suppose, directed at kids. The gum tin is designed to be like a "Band Aid" tin, only multi-colored and fruity flavored.

"Gum portions are too small to effectively blow bubbles, but that may just be a factor of the general portion size for gum nowadays. However, when I did try the bubble it held together nicely and achieved a decent size, given the amount of gum. Back in “the day”, we used to chew 3 or 4 pieces of Hubba Bubba at a time to get huge bubbles. I did that with this and it worked out great."
"Good for bubbles initially."

2.83 - Wrigley’s 5: Zing

Wrigley’s 5: Zing describes it self as "a sour to sweet bubble". (That’s it, “a sour to sweet bubble”…not bubble gum, just "bubble"). Wrigley's 5 is a line that appeared a few years ago (at least when I became aware of it) with strange and unique names for gum.

Welcome to the blog!

Welcome to the inaugural post for Now, Chew On This...

This blog started up from a discussion at work after a particularly nasty gum chewing experience. It was decided to start a gum rating blog for two reasons:
1) I have been looking for a blog topic.
2) To help people decide what gum to chew.

The Now Chew On This... crew is comprised of 4 guys who work technical support. Jay, Dan, Adam, and Kevin. We will also have guest chewers to help review every now and then.

Here is our process:
We must chew the gum for at least 20 minutes

We will rate the gum on a scale of 1-5 (with 5 being the highest), and will have comments (in no particular order) on the following factors:

Flavor Longevity (How long does the flavor really last? We will knock a point off for gum that claims to be extra long lasting flavor and are not.)

Taste (How does the gum taste? Does it match what it claims to be? Was it "good"?)

Flavor Strength (How strong is the flavor? Too much? Too weak?)

Texture & Consistency (Is it too dense to chew? Like chewing air? Too soft?)

Refreshment (Does it refresh your mouth? Does it moisten or dry your mouth?)

For special gums (such as gel gums, bubblegums, blow pops), we will have additional factors that apply.
